What does a Snook look like?

The Snook is a prized fish amongst anglers in the St. Pete Beach / Tampa Bay area. A Snook can be identified by it’s underslung lower jaw, large fins, distinctive body shape, tapered head and snout, and most easily identifiable factor, a black stripe running across the full length of the fish’s lateral line.

What is snook season in FL?

Snook season in FL is closed from Dec. 1st through the end of February and May 1st through August 31st. If you already know that snook are in season, you may be heading out for a fishing trip on St. Pete Beach and wondering what to expect? Well, Snook range from 3 to 15 pounds, but catching a trophy snook in the 20 to 30 pound range is not unusual in the Gulf of Mexico. The world record for the largest snook is 53 pounds, 10 ounces and the largest Snook ever caught in Florida came in a record 44 pounds, 3 ounces.

Well, fist you need to make sure you caught your snook in season. Snook season is closed from Dec. 1st through the end of February and May 1st through August 31st. Next you will want to make sure your snook is within the bag limit. The slot size limit for Snook is 28 to 33 inches. So you have caught yourself a keeper! Now you’re wondering, can you eat a snook? Snook fillets are very flavorful and are on the top of almost every fisherman’s list of favorites. So to answer your question… YES, you can and should eat Snook.

When fishing for Snook on St. Pete Beach / Tampa Bay, they can be found in a variety of areas. Many Snook live along mangrove shorelines, grassy flats, passes and inlets. Snook can also be found around pier and bridge pilings making for a difficult but rewarding catch.
